2011 Teaching Award

The MCD Teaching Award is designed to recognize excellence in teaching, using the term "teacher" in a broad sense. In order to be considered, the nominee must be a member of NCA and the MCD, must have taught for over ten years (post-graduate), and must have been recognized for teaching excellence by his/her department, unit, college/university, or other group or association. This includes, but is not limited to, awards, merit evaluations, student recognition, etc.

Self-nomination is encouraged in addition to nominations by others. The nomination packet should include the online Application for Candidate Nomination (the above link) and the applicant's updated curriculum vitae. Supplemental materials, including letters of recommendation from colleagues and former students, are encouraged but not required.

To be considered for the teaching award, nominators or applicants must:

  • complete the online application (above link), which includes:
    • basic contact information for nominator and/or applicant
    • a brief (less than 300 words) statement of nomination
    • a brief (less 300 words) summary of teaching evaluations
    • a brief (less than 300 words) statement of teaching philosophy
    • a list of teaching awards and recognitions.*
  • send a copy of applicant's updated curriculum vitae to:

    Dana Mastro
    University of Arizona
    Department of Communication, Building 25
    Tucson, AZ 85721
    (electronic submissions to mastro@email.arizona.edu)

Questions about the nominations process can be sent to Dana Mastro at mastro@email.arizona.edu.

Nominations should be received no later than September 30. An award committee will discuss the nominations. The award committee will consist of the immediate past chair, chair, vice-chair, vice-chair elect and secretary of the MCD. The final decision will be made by October 15. The award recipient will be contacted and invited to attend the MCD Business Meeting during the NCA annual convention to receive the award. The MCD reserves the right to not grant any awards.

*All applicants and/or nominators are encouraged to keep an extra copy of all on-line application materials in case of computer error. You will be notified by e-mail when your application materials have been received.
